About the event:  

Led by an experienced dementia nurse, this session is aimed at carers supporting someone in the early or mid stages of dementia.
Do you care for someone with dementia? This session will help you understand the basics of dementia and some of the challenges that come with the condition. The following topics will be covered in the session:
– What dementia is
– An explanation of the different types of dementia
– An understanding of diagnosis and treatment
– The impact of dementia on the person you care for
– Post-diagnostic support
– How dementia challenges communication.
There will be an opportunity to ask questions throughout the session.

About the event:  

Join Occupational Therapist Rhona McAlpine to discuss individual differences rather than deficit in neurodiversity. Learn how we can focus on changes to the environment rather than attempt to ‘fix’ the individual and how we can promote positive mental health and wellbeing in children and people with Additional Support Needs.

Rhona McAlpine, Occupational Therapist. Rhona is an HCPC registered OT with over fifteen years experience working in child and adolescent mental health services. She is passionate about supporting positive mental health and wellbeing by adopting and prmoting a nerodiverse affirming approach.

Tap Into IT is a small Edinburgh-based charity with over 10 years’ experience of helping older people, including those with disabilities and health problems, access the internet and digital technology. Through an inclusive, accessible service we aim to support people in ‘tapping into’ the benefits of the internet via their laptops, iPads and mobile phones.

Led by an experienced dementia nurse, this session will help you understand and manage behaviour you might find distressing, or hard to deal with.
Do you care for someone with dementia? This workshop will help you understand and manage behaviour you might find distressing or hard to deal with. This session is aimed at carers who care for someone who has mid- to late-stage dementia, or/and want to understand more about what triggers the behaviours they find challenging and how to reduce them or cope with them.
The following topics will be covered in the session:
-Information on why those with dementia may exhibit certain behaviours
-Ways of responding to stress and distress in dementia
-Understanding our response to these behaviours

About the event:  

Join Corrie Mclean in this informal session to discuss how girls with autism are often overlooked, under-diagnosed and less likely to get long-term support. We will look at issues that autistic girls may face and you will learn practical skills to support them and you as a carer.
Topics include:
• What we are learning about girls and autism through current research
• How autism may affect girls differently, and the key characteristics to look out for
• Issues that autistic girls may face during puberty and beyond including mental health
• Practical skills to help girls and yourselves as carers

Delivered by:

Corrie McLean. Corrie has been working in education for a decade, developing her specialist skills in sexual health and inclusive learning. She works closely with vulnerable individuals with ASN and parents and carers who support them.

Macrame a mini houseplant hanger in this 2-hour workshop. A choice of macrame rope colours and embellishments will be provided.

When: Wednesday 17 April – Wednesday 8 May, 12pm – 1pm.

About the event:  

This gentle yoga class will begin with intention setting and a variety of breathing practices. This is followed by a gentle flow of sun salutations, balances and twists for flexibility, balance and strength. We will finish each session with a guided meditation.
Expect to feel relaxed and rejuvenated after every session, bringing a sense of wellbeing into every aspect of your life. Modifications and both chair and mat options available.

Delivered by:

Emily is inspired by yoga for sleep recovery after completing the course for teachers with Lisa Sanfilippo in 2020. She is trained as a yoga therapist and brings calming and therapeutic elements to each of her classes. She has been teaching since she graduated from her 200 hours course in 2018. She aims to create an atmosphere that is inclusive, relaxing and enjoyable.
