About the event: If you employ or are planning to employ Personal Assistants using a Direct Payment from the local authority, join VOCAL and Lothian Centre for Inclusive Living (LCiL) to find out about employer responsibilities, safe recruitment and day-to-day management of support, as well as information and advice for you.

By the end of the session you will have:
• A better understanding of employer responsibilities and safe recruitment practice
• Advice on supporting the day-to-day management of Personal Assistants
• Information on next steps and accessing independent support

‘Employing a Personal Assistant – the recruitment process’ will take place on Tuesday 23rd September 1pm to 2:30pm. This session looks into the recruitment process in more depth. Click here for more information and booking. Please note, you do not need to attend both sessions.

About the event: Join us at Lothian Disabled Living Centre at Astley Ainslie Hospital for independent advice about buying equipment to assist in daily living. We will share an overview of the service, and advice on how to make an informed choice before purchasing equipment.

When: Monday 25 August, 10:30am – 12pm

About the event: Enjoy the benefits of walking and meet other carers while being out in nature. This group will meet on the last Monday of every month at Dalkeith Country Park.

Our walks are gentle and a great opportunity to get some fresh air and a little bit of time out! No need to attend every month, book separately each month.

The VOCAL Midlothian local attraction and outdoor group will go for walks and visit attractions in local areas.

A VOCAL representative will arrive at 10:15am, have a bright yellow VOCAL t-shirt on and will meet everyone at the tall tree next to the seating area between the Palace and the Town Gate (the Town gate can be found on Dalkeith High Street).

The meeting point is north of the main car park (up the small hill) or straight ahead if you walk in from the town gate.

Please note there is a charge to park in the car park at Dalkeith country park.

The walking route will last just over 1 hour (around 9,000 steps) and although the route will be generally flat, there may be uneven ground, small gradients, muddy ground and stairs.

Participants are expected to provide their own appropriate clothing and shoes, including waterproof clothing for wet days.

Participants are responsible for assessing their own risk and the safety of themselves.

About the event: Come to our carer centre in Edinburgh and bring your device (laptop/tablet/iPad/Smart Phone) to get support to tap into the benefits of the internet and technology or just to get help with something you would like to do such as: connect your device to the internet, download apps onto your device, set up online banking or an account with a shop, connect to Zoom. Lesley from Tap Into IT can help you with all of your technology queries! Tap Into IT is a small Edinburgh-based charity with over 10 years’ experience of helping people, including those with disabilities and health problems, access the internet and digital technology. Through an inclusive, accessible service we aim to support people in ‘tapping into’ the benefits of the internet via their laptops, iPads and mobile phones.

About the event:Do you care for someone with dementia? This workshop will help you understand and manage behaviour you might find distressing or hard to deal with. This session is aimed at carers who care for someone who has mid- to late-stage dementia, or/and want to understand more about what triggers the behaviours they find challenging and how to reduce them or cope with them. The following topics will be covered in the session:

  • Information on why those with dementia may exhibit certain behaviours
  • Ways of responding to stress and distress in dementia
  • Understanding our response to these behaviours

About the event: Join our wonderful artist, Juliana, for a fun new art project every month! You’ll learn exciting skills while meeting great people along the way. This month we will be glazing ceramic mugs.

Glazing ceramic mugs
Learning how to glaze ceramic tiles and pottery. Some of the group made clay mugs and jugs back in June’s session and Juliana is bringing along spare ones and clay tiles for everyone else! All welcome. Everyone’s creations will be fired in a kiln at Juliana’s studio and brought back to the September session. All materials will be provided, and you can take away your creation. No previous experience or skills are necessary. No need to attend every month, book separately each month.
